Sky Eats Airplane Takes Off!
By Jacki Spencer • Jul 2008 • InterviewsIt seems that just yesterday that Shout! was gushing over a certain up and coming band that we knew was going to blow everyone’s mind. Alesana. Oddly enough, the band you’re about to read about just toured with them, and if they keep going the way that their tourmates did, watch out! These first-time Warped Tourers are in for a ride!
Forming just three years ago, Sky Eats Airplane has already produced 2 albums, graced some kick ass tours, and are wining and dining their label. I think the staff here at Shout! have a pretty good feel to which band will be the next big thing, so get ahead of the crowd and read on about SEA and their new Wikipedia page, relationships with their fans [you!] and what’s in store for them next so you have something to ask them at their next meet and greet!
S!: It seems you can find everything on Wikipedia these days. Except you! Your album has a page but the band itself doesn’t. Why doesn’t SEA have a Wikipedia page and will one be in the works?
Lee: [Laughs] Well we actually had a Wikipedia a few times. The first time we had it everything was fine, and then a friend of mine, Daniel Hunter from Playradioplay, thought it would be funny to put a bunch of funny crap on there and apparently an admin saw it and locked it up. Recently we got it unlocked again after giving them enough info to make us wiki-worthy, but then someone else relocked it up. Its the most cursed thing ever! Hopefully being signed now they will unlock it. [Laughs] who knows.
S!: You finally signed to Equal Vision Records this year. What prerequisites did you have before signing with a label?
Lee: We already had a year of touring under our belt and a self released album, so we were pretty well off. Having them just gives us the extra punch to get ahead of the game now.
S!: You’ve always been close with this label. Why wasn’t a relationship started before?
Lee: We met the EVR guys for the first time when we were a 2 piece. While they might have wanted to throw us a deal even back then, I know that no one would want to sign a band and then have them change as drastically as we have. I wanted to make sure they knew exactly what they were getting into.
S!: You’re confirmed to play on the Smartpunk Stage at Vans Warped Tour this summer. What are you looking forward most about the Warped experience?
Lee: I’m definitely looking forward to the larger stages and pits, and also bro’ing down with the other bands on the tour. I think it has been a dream of all of ours since childhood to be playing on a huge tour such as that.
S!: Recommend a lesser known band to our readers that we should be watching out for!
Lee: I’ll be completely honest…I have absolutely no idea who else is playing Warped Tour. But I think that’s the most amazing thing about Warped Tour is that you can go blindly every year and find tons of bands you will look up the next day after you Aloe-vera up your tanlines.
S!: Is there any band not playing that you wish was?
Lee: Glassjaw would rule. Wait…are they playing? [Laughs] I just remember going to warped tour when I first got into our music scene and fell in love with Glassjaw and Poison The Well, and I got my left shoe signed by Glassjaw and my right one signed by Poison The Well. I’ve never been a real sentimental person when it comes to keeping material things since I just mowed in the same pair of shoes the next day, but what stayed with me forever was that I was able to interact with both bands at the signing booths. That meant more than any scribbles from a sharpie. I definitely hope that we can give the same feeling out to anyone at shows to come. I guess you can say its sort of a cycle and I’m wanting to give back to fans the way my idols from my childhood did.
S!: Your official website hasn’t been updated since February 2007 yet your MySpace blog has. Do you feel sites like MySpace reach out to your fans better and why?
Lee: [Laughs] that’s sad that this is coming up in questions, because we have just been too lazy to update that thing. Maybe its just because MySpace is so second nature now (I instinctly type in www.myspace.com into the address bar even when I mean to do something else). I think MySpace is great because its not so one-ended as a website is. You can interact with the website, but not with the band members. Just being our friend on MySpace lets you see what we’re up to through bulletins, whether silly or serious, and you can send us a message/comment and know for a fact the band members will read what you say. Just remember that all of us have been in our fans’ places before.
S!: SEA obviously cares about their growing loyal fanbase. What can you tell Shout! readers about your relationship with your fans personally and as a band?
Lee: All of us honestly are humbled by people who have supported us thus far. Without them, we would still be either at our day jobs or in college. As for me, I was pretty frustrated with the electrical engineering degree I was pursuing and found an outlet when the band took off. We like to keep a close relationship to our fans to give back some to how much they have given us.
S!: Is there one particular song you would recommend to hook a new fan of yours?
Lee: Check out The Artificial on our MySpace page. There’s a lot of mood changes all throughout that song, from chill to heavy to epic parts!
S!: Any last words you’d like to say to those fans?
Lee: Grand Theft Auto 4 rules. It’s on pause right now while we’ve been chatting it up, but its about to get rocked yet again in like less than a minute.
